Join us at the Owens Art Gallery to celebrate the opening of Automatisme Ambulatoire: Hysteria, Imitation, Performance, a screening of Hystera Theater by My Barbarian and the inaugural presentation of Brendan Fernandes’ performance-activated installation The Rite. Refreshments will be served.

tributary explores ideas of impersonation and tribute and links them to the ways disabled individuals may have been conditioned, through medical interventions from childhood, to strive for some mythical or iconic body. Looking through and into the world of the professional tribute artist, tributary examines notions of spectacle and control, as well as the provocation of disturbing bodies and the re-appropriation of Crip movement. This work encompasses a live, three-day performance-installation by Claire Cunningham and performer Vicky Malin and its documentary residue (video, costumes, props), which will remain—as a tribute—within the gallery for the remainder of the exhibition.
Automatisme Ambulatoire Matinée

Coinciding with Sackville’s Fall Fair, this afternoon event allows visitors to explore the exhibition Automatisme Ambulatoire and spend time drawing by touch in the galleries. Young visitors can borrow new Art Kits featuring playful, in-gallery artmaking activities that respond to artworks on view. Dancers will activate Brendan Fernandes’ installation The Rite from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm.

Owens After Dark

Go behind the scenes and visit spaces rarely seen by the public, including the Fine Art Conservation Laboratory and Painting Vault. Take time to explore the current exhibition, Automatisme Ambulatoire, and, from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm, view a performance-activation of Brendan Fernandes’ installation, The Rite.

Artist Talk with Diane Borsato

Join us for an artist talk with Diane Borsato, who will discuss her work Gems and Minerals, presented in Automatisme Ambulatoire: Hysteria, Imitation, Performance. In her projects Borsato has worked closely with various other practitioners including artists, dancers, and amateur naturalists.
This talk is part of the Visiting Artists Program organized by the Owens Art Gallery, Mount Allison University’s Department of Fine Arts and Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre. All are welcome to attend.

Currently based out of Chicago, Brendan’s projects address issues of race, queer culture, migration, protest and other forms of collective movement.
