This publication coincides with the exhibition The Matter at Hand: Paintings and Hand-painted China by Ethel Ogden, 22 April to 2 September 2018, curated by Gemey Kelly and Jane Tisdale.

Ogden attended the Mount Allison Ladies’ College and the Owens Art Institution in Saint John, New Brunswick, where she studied with John Hammond before beginning her own teaching career. Her oeuvre includes still life, landscape and portraiture, as well as hand-painted porcelain, a popular art form in the late nineteenth century.

The publication includes an essay and timeline by Gemey Kelly and Jane Tisdale.
