This publication coincides with the exhibition The Animal Observed: Works from the Permanent Collection held at the Owens Art Gallery from 10 June to 29 August 1993.

Animals have a long history of appearing in art. Artworks emerge from the permanent collection to showcase this long history of animals as symbols of harmony and stability within the natural order of the universe.

This publication includes an introduction by Gemey Kelley and a list of works featured in the exhibition.
