Two hands hold up a softcover book. On the cover, a hooked rug depicts a grey barn and a white house divided by trees in the centre of the yard.

This publication coincides with the exhibition Documenting the Farm held at the Owens Art Gallery from 15 January to 28 February 2016.

Hooked rugs and screen printed recipes on feedsack fabric document the farm granted to Joanna Close’s ancestors in 1858. This farm remained in their family until 2011, at which point it was sold to a neighbouring gravel quarry. Many other small farms have similar stories, as it is difficult to make a living from these rural New Brunswick farms.

The publication includes a foreword by Gemey Kelly, artist statement by Joanna Close, and conversation with Joanna Close by Adrianna Kuiper.
