Two hands hold up a softcover book. Centred on the cover is a painting of two people sitting on a blue blanket in a forest. Tree branches spread across the entire painting.

This publication coincides with the exhibition Signs and Symbols: Paintings by Andrea Mortson held at the Owens Art Gallery from 18 February to 27 March 2011.

Andrea Mortson’s paintings imagine a world that is marked by interpretations of the natural environment. They are embedded in a traditional landscape-based practice, with art historical references to Classical paintings of the figure in a landscape.

Two hands hold open a book. On the right page is a portrait of a child in front of bright green trees and a deer. The trees become abstracted in swatches of colour and decorate the child's shirt.
