The Matter at Hand: Paintings and Hand-painted China by Ethel Ogden

About this exhibition

An exhibition of paintings and hand-painted china by New Brunswick artist and teacher Ethel Ogden (1869 -1902). Ogden attended the Mount Allison Ladies’ College and the Owens Art Institution in Saint John, New Brunswick, where she studied with John Hammond before beginning her own teaching career. Her oeuvre includes still life, landscape and portraiture, as well as hand-painted porcelain, a popular art form in the late nineteenth century. The Matter at Hand features Ogden’s work in the Owens Art Gallery collection as well as paintings borrowed from private collectors.

Organized by Gemey Kelly and Jane Tisdale and accompanied by an extensive publication on Ogden’s life and times.
