Alex Colville: Throwing Light

About this exhibition

Highlighting Colville’s interest in the relationship between things, Alex Colville: Throwing Light, takes its title from a statement made by the artist: “The painting starts to work, sometimes, when two elements appear to throw light on each other.” Echoing the quote that prompted The Colville Drawing Dice, this exhibition features prints and paintings by the artist that draw together disparate elements to illuminate connections or tensions between things.

The Colville Drawing Dice, which are part of the exhibition, are an invitation to consider recurring motifs in the artist’s work while exploring drawing as a way of thinking and space for imagination.

The Owens Art Gallery holds numerous works by Alex Colville (1920-2013), including the painting Seven Crows (1980), the mural Athletes (1961), and the complete set of thirty-five silkscreen prints produced by the artist during his lifetime. The Owens also oversees Colville House, a house museum devoted to the artist’s creative practice that includes an installation of the contents of Colville’s studio as he left it at the time of his death in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
