An adult holds a pencil and bright green sketchbook. The cover reads "You Are Here" and "Vous Etes Ici", and a circle cut into the cover reveals a blue river on the page beneath.

Pick up a special You Are Here Sketchbook

Bright sun and warm days have us dreaming about drawing outdoors, and what better place to draw than in your own backyard or the places that you know best. As a companion to our online mapping project, You Are Here: Seeing Sackville through the Owens Art Gallery Collection (www.youareheresackvillenb.ca), we’ve designed a special sketchbook for anyone looking to put pencil to paper this spring and summer. Each sketchbook comes with a sketching pencil so that you have everything you need to set off on a drawing adventure close to home, down your street, or out onto the marsh.

What will you find? Perhaps you’ll draw the rooflines of your street, your favourite tree, or maybe the wide-open fields outside of town.

Whatever view catches your eye, whether a sweeping scene or an up-close detail, we hope that you will share it with us. Take a picture of your drawing and add it to the You Are Here map of Sackville. You can submit your drawing directly through this link (https://airtable.com/shrqyAT5gVzmzYf4d) or through any “Share Your View” button in You Are Here.

Sketchbooks are free for anyone young or old looking to make a little more time for drawing and exploring in their day. Stop by the Owens any weekday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm to pick up your sketching set. Community masks are required for picking up sketchbooks. If you would like to combine your sketchbook pick-up with a visit to see our current exhibitions, please book a ticket at www.owensartgallery.eventbrite.ca to reserve your time slot.

You Are Here was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It activates the Owens’ collection through works that connect to the local Sackville environment. Bridging online and physical space, You Are Here encompasses historical and contemporary perspectives through an interactive map. The map presents thirty-nine works from the Owens alongside a growing collection of Community Views that extend the ways we see Sackville, while also offering personal perspectives on place.

Since time immemorial, artists have lived in Siknikt, the district of Mi’kma’ki in which Sackville is located. With this in mind, we acknowledge, honour, and pay respect to the traditional owners and custodians—from all four directions—of this land. Mount Allison University and the Owens Art Gallery are built upon the unceded, ancestral lands of the L’nuk (Mi’kmaq). This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship,” which the Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, and Peskotomuhkati first signed with the British Crown in 1725.
